Princess Fairy
Biography
Princess Fairy turned 30, which is a big milestone for her. She has wanted to make music since graduating high school, and even though she was shy as a kid, she always dreamed of being a performer of some kind. It wasn’t until after the pandemic that she finally started making music on her iPad—then her first EP was born.
Q: What inspired you to pursue music?
Princess Fairy: “Some of my musical inspirations—I feel like everyone already knows—one of them is definitely Grimes. I started making music in 2020, and about a year ago, I took my EP down from streaming platforms. I reworked two of the songs and reposted them. Ever since then, I’ve been pretty much working on music consistently.”
Q: Who are your music influences? Who would you like to work with?
Princess Fairy: "Well, I have a lot more musical inspirations now. You know, Grimes has been pretty problematic over the past few years [laughs]. But I really like that weird, ethereal, alien-pop kind of sound. Since I started listening to her music, I’ve discovered other similar artists like Tei Shi and Magdalena Bay. My main goal is to sound as ethereal as I can, because I want to make other people feel the way I feel when I listen to those artists."
"Omg, one of my friends likes this artist named Faerybabyy, and her music is not at all what you'd expect based on the name. It sounds like surf rock, I guess—and it’s really cool. My friend was saying it would be awesome if I collaborated with her. I think we have two completely different sounds, but I still think that would be really cool."
Q: How do you approach creating music?
Princess Fairy: "Hmm, yeah. So I was watching an interview years ago about how MGMT made their music. They said they produce all the music first and then write the lyrics. So I kind of approached it the same way. I produce the music first, and then I start thinking about what I want the song to be about. I’ll begin with the lyrics, then try to find the harmonies and melodies to see how they work with the track."
Q: What is one of your favorite songs that you’ve written or performed and why?
Princess Fairy: “I haven’t performed any of my songs yet—I’m still super, super shy. But I also stream on Twitch, and that’s helped me get more comfortable with talking, which has eased some of my shyness. I used to be too nervous to sing on Twitch, but now I can— and I even do karaoke sometimes.”
“My favorite song that I’ve written and produced is actually the very first one I ever made. It’s called “Anybody.” I think it’s my favorite because it’s the most upbeat, even though the lyrics are fairly sad. For some reason, that one ended up sounding cleaner and more studio-produced than my other songs. It has more of a twinkly vibe, with lots of ooo’s and aaah’s. It’s always been my favorite— and it still is.”
Q: What are your thoughts on the music industry right now?
Princess Fairy: “I think the industry is very saturated, so it’s hard to break in at all. It also seems really intimidating to get signed by a big label, because there are a lot of concerns around whether you’ll actually be taken care of. Being in the music can come with a lot of struggles. I’m not neutral about it, but I’m not completely against it either.”
Q: How do you continue to grow as an artist?
Princess Fairy: “I try to find inspiration in the things that really hit me in life. I think taking real-life situations—especially heavy ones—can be a powerful creative outlet, allowing you to express those emotions. Some of the first songs I wrote actually started as old poems from my journal that I later revised and turned into lyrics.”
Q: Is there anything else you would like for us to know about you?
Princess Fairy: “I love musicals, and one of my biggest dreams is to be in a Broadway show. I want to be in Hairspray so badly—I would love to play Penny Pingleton. Musicals were one of the first things that made me want to sing and helped me discover how much I enjoy it.”
Q: Where can The Musiq Plug fans find your music?
Princess Fairy: “Gasps! You can find me on pretty much every streaming service—I go by Princess Fairy.'“
